"Thank You" Just Isn't Enough

My husband and I have been watching the Ken Burns documentary, "The War," about World War 2.

If one considers only the sheer numbers of our military who were lost in the multiple fronts of this war, the sacrifices would be tremendous. But when we add those wounded, those interred in prison camps, the civilians interred, wounded and killed, the sacrifices are indescribable.

How do you say "thank you" for the sacrifice, the bravery and the perserverance displayed during this great war, and doubtless those wars before and after? The mere words are not enough.

In watching this documentary, my heart swelled with pride and with sorrow at each description of Guadalcanal, Peleliu or Iwo Jima. Having read "You'll Be Sor-ree!" by Sid Phillips and "My Helmet for a Pillow" by Robert Leckie, I have a tiny perspective of what our men and women in uniform suffer during combat.

It didn't take much for my thoughts to travel from the wars of yesteryear and those who fought those wars, to the wars of today and my son who helped fight them as a United States Marine. I see, and hear, in him the same attitude as portrayed by the men of years ago. . ."We were just doing our jobs." If we tried for the rest of our lives, we could never offer enough thanks for the sacrifies that have been made to secure our freedom.

But there is another sacrifice, infinitely greater, that has secured another, greater, freedom...

"For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." Romans 8:2-4

Our Lord was tempted in all ways as are we and was yet without sin. He willingly left the glory of His Father to sacrifice all for us. The Creator of the universe lived a life as a human that He might free us "from the law of sin and death."

"Thank you" just isn't enough to convey our gratitude for the sacrifice He made. If we tried for all eternity, we could never offer enough thanks for the sacrifices He made to secure our freedom from sin and wrath.

As we should take every opportunity to thank those who have secured our earthly freedom and we should take every opportunity to thank the One who has secured our eternal freedom.

My Tribute
by Andrae Crouch

How can I say thanks for the things You have done for me?
Things so undeserved yet You gave to prove Your love for me?
The voices of a million angels could not express my gratitude,
All that I am and every hope to be, I owe it all to Thee.

To God be the glory, to God be the glory,
to God be the glory, For the things He hath done.
With His blood, He has saved me.
With His power, He has raised me.
To God be the glory, for the things He hath done.

Just let me live my life, may it be pleasing Lord to Thee.
And if I should gain any praise, let it go to Calvary.

With His blood, He has saved me.
With His power, He has raised me.
To God be the glory, for the things He hath done.
To God be the glory, to God be the glory, to God be the glory,
For the things He hath done.

"For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin;
that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him."
2 Corinthians 5:21
